$1.9 million for Polar Grid research

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded an IU-led team $1.96 million to create a cyberinfrastructure that will help scientists better understand the current and future state of polar ice sheets. Under the leadership of Geoffrey C. Fox, director of Pervasive Technology Labs' Community Grids Lab and IU professor of informatics, the project team includes partners from Elizabeth City State University and the University of Kansas' Center for the Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets.

    Joseph Cottam of the Open Systems Lab (OSL) recently received the first ever Microsoft award from the International Network of Social Network Analysis (INSNA) for his paper "Extended Assortivity and the Structure in the Open Source Development Community", co-authored with OSL director Andrew Lumsdaine. The award includes a $1,000 cash prize provided by a donation from Microsoft given to authors of outstanding papers that address social relations aspects of software development. Cottam and Lumsdaine introduce a set of tools they call "Developmetrics" to investigate community formation and product development in the open source software community. Read the paper.

Pervasive Technology Labs founder and CEO, Michael A. McRobbie named president of IU

The Trustees of Indiana University on March 1 unanimously approved the appointment of Michael A. McRobbie as the 18th president of the 187-year-old institution with eight campuses and more than 97,000 students. McRobbie, formerly the interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at IU Bloomington, has been a senior administrator at IU for 10 years.

Named IU's first Vice President for Information Technology in 1997, McRobbie made visionary advances in IT, and built a foundation that galvanized and focused research into pressing questions across academe, and notably within the life sciences. McRobbie's vision has enabled IU's emergence as a research powerhouse, and contributes to shaping a bright economic future for the state of Indiana. The beneficiaries of McRobbie's vision include communities local and international -- education in Indiana, the state and its economy, the nation and its health, and the international exchange of ideas and development of community.

IU research team offers supercomputing-powered web services for drug researchers and scientists

More public data and lots of it. That's what researchers from Indiana University will give drug researchers and scientists with a new set of web services made possible through the Chemical Informatics and Cyberinfrastructure Collaboratory (CICC), a partnership between the Pervasive Technology Labs at Indiana University, the IU School of Informatics, and the IUB Department of Chemistry. The group will be demonstrating the new web services for the first time at this week's annual Supercomputing (SC06) conference in Tampa, Florida .

Open-source software powers top US academic supercomputer

Indiana University’s supercomputer, Big Red, is the fastest supercomputer among all US academic institutions and the 23rd fastest supercomputer in the world, according to a list, released today, of the world's most powerful computer systems.

To achieve the greatest parallel processing efficiency, IU will be using the OpenMPI implementation of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) specification. OpenMPI was created by an international consortium of several major research labs including the Open Systems Lab, part of Pervasive Technology Labs at Indiana University. OpenMPI provides especially advanced tools for taking advantage of and effectively utilizing a complex supercomputer cluster such as Big Red. See news release.

    Advanced Network Management Lab researchers describe potential consequences for young people who post personal information on online "blogs" and social networking websites
    In an interview recorded at a demonstration given to students and teachers attending the 2006 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and aired on Indiana NPR stations, ANML's Edward Balas and Mark Meiss explained that employers now routinely use information found online to evaluate a job-seeker’s character. They warned that individuals can not easily "take back" information once it has been put on the Internet and they encouraged young people to think carefully about unintended consequences before posting personal information on websites.     Science Education Gets Boost from Veolia

    Tim Hewitt of Veolia Water Indianapolis (VWI) announced a $200,000 gift to the Visualization and Interactive Spaces Lab and IUPUI's Center for Earth and Environmental Science at a May 8 event held near the White River on the IUPUI campus. The VWI gift will be used to establish a science education program called Discovering the Science of the Environment.
